Ahmedabad, January 16, 2016

MICAVAANI 90.4 FM, MICA’s very own Community Radio Station visited two villages on the 14th of January 2016, to celebrate the occasion of Uttarayan with their listeners.

This Uttarayan, the team of 16 student radio jockeys from MICAVAANI 90.4 FM took the celebrations to their listeners in the villages of Shela and Telav, located within a distance of 7 km radius from their campus. Like each year, the team went from door to door to spread festive cheer and share sweets. This year saw unprecedented recognition and recall for the young students who were ecstatic to see the face behind the voices which they hear every evening. “Like last year, we wanted to interact with our listeners and this time, we did a dual activation, where the villagers to request their songs to the team and the same would be played on –air. The joy on their faces was incredible when their names were announced on the radio platform. It felt really good and we are looking forward to more such interactions in the coming future,” said Banafsha, a member of the Programming function of the committee.

The villagers were happy to interact with their favorite radio jockeys and were also seen flying kites and sharing customary sweets with the team. Some even clicked selfies with the team and expressed their wish to come on-air soon. Tarangini said, “Community engagement is what a Community Radio Station is all about and that is what, we at MICAVAANI 90.4 FM, believe in. This was just one of the activations that we do throughout the year and we have one more such interaction coming up on the 26th of this month. Apart from this, we also ensure that we do primary research and ethnography so as to make the shows more interesting and educative for the listeners.”

On Saturday, 16th January 2016, two little girls aged 7 and 8 visited the MICA campus as part of the Teach for India Program. They were accompanied by their teacher Manoghma. They were taken around the campus, followed by a visit to the MICAVAANI studio. These children spoke to the MICAVAANI members about their life journey. Manoghma explained the Teach for India philosophy and pedagogy to the students at MICA, in order to spread awareness and make the process of education more inclusive. The little girls co-incidentally named Aksha and Aqsa described to the students how they are taught and how they apply the classroom lessons in practical situations. The girls even though young in age, talked about important issues like racism and importance of education for development. The visit was extremely fun for them as they sang songs on air and also performed certain dance steps which they like calling the 'Energizer'. They left the campus extremely happy, after the fun activities conducted by the MICAVAANI Team, and the MICAns were content and enlightened as there was learning for both the parties.

MICAVAANI 90.4 FM is MICA’s own community radio station, run completely by students. Started in 2005, it broadcasts a radius of 7 kms and covers over 4 villages and 20,000 listeners. The radio station also looks at research and partnerships with local and national brands for collaboration and aims to spread awareness on various causes.
