MICA, India’s premiere management institute in Strategic Marketing and Communication, will soon commence its one day Workshop on “New Media and Digital Philosophy” to be held at their campus premises in Ahmedabad.

The workshop is set to be hosted on 3rd March 2015, and will be presided over by Prof. Shanyang Zhao, Professor of Sociology from Temple University, United States along with several members of MICA Faculty such as Dr. Saumya Pant, Dr. Santosh K.Patra and Dr. T.T.Sreekumar; and other guests from esteemed institutes of learning such as University of Madras and IIT Hyderabad.

Prof. Zhao is a well-known person in his field, famous for his vast knowledge in digital philosophy. He holds impeccable credentials which include a Masters in Sociology from University of Missouri, Kansas City,a Ph.D. from University of Maryland, College Park and various academic papers to his name, some of which are “Ethno-Racial Identity Disputes on Facebook”, “Self as an Emic Object: A Re-reading of William James on Self” and “Gender Gaps in Civic and Political Participation in Latin America.” Prof. Zhao’s research interests primarily include internet and human interaction, self and identity, metatheory and metamethods with his major focus being phenomenological theory to the analysis of the emergent digital world. His research findings call for a paradigm shift in the sociological stance toward human interaction in the online world.

The workshop will begin with a Welcome address by Dr. Nagesh Rao, President and Director, MICA, followed by the Keynote speech by Prof. Zhao. A panel discussion on “Understanding New Media: Emerging Perspectives” will involve distinguished speakers sharing their viewpoints and learnings after which an open forum interaction and reflections by workshop participants is scheduled.

On 4th March, Prof. Zhao will also be addressing a research colloquium on the topic “Differences between the U.S. and China in politeness and mannerism: an interpretive enquiry” which aims to focus on the differences between Americans and Chinese in what they consider to be polite in dealing with others.  While both societies emphasize mannerism in everyday life, there are considerable variations in what they regard as "good manners" and these variations reflect larger differences in culture and tradition.  The talk would be based on his personal cross-cultural experiences as well as the literature on mannerism and politeness. The program will call for its participants to understand and analyze Prof. Zhao’s contributions and attempt to situate his ideas in the larger contexts of emerging scholarly approaches to the study of social media and cyberspace from sociological and philosophical perspectives.
