Ahmedabad, July 17, 2015

On the evening of 16th July, MICA kick started its year of events with faculty, students and members of the community, collecting themselves under the tree at the heart of the campus. They together, submerged themselves in the cultural heritage of the Manganiar folk, through the fantastic efforts of MICA Studio7 and SPICMACAY, which has been a driver in getting various artists of the likes of Pt. SPIC MACAY or Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth wasfounded in 1977. It is a voluntary, apolitical, participatory student movement which aims to enrich the education process by exposing students to the rich cultural traditions of India.SPIC MACAY has more than 300 chapters, both in India and abroad and it organises more than a 2500 programmes every year in schools and colleges.

This circuit, SPICMACAY and MICA Studio7 hosted a Manganiar line-up including Bhutte Khan (Main Artist), Sakhi Khan (Vocal , Harmonium), Dada Khan (Kartaal and Veena and Vocals), Ahmed Khan (Kamaicha), Salim Khan (Dholak), Miss Sangeeta (Dance), Miss Dipika (Dance), VikramNath (Manjira). Manganiars are groups of hereditary professional musicians, whose music has been supported by wealthy landlords and aristocrats for generations. TheManganiar performance traditionally invoke the Hindu god Krishna and seek his blessings before beginning their recital. At one time, the Manganiars were musicians of the Rajput courts, accompanying their chiefs to war and providing them with entertainment before and after the battles and in the event of his death, would perform at the ruler's vigil day and night until the mourning was over.

Under the tree unfolded the Manganiar lore, with Khan Ji narrating stories behind classic folk songs such as ‘padhaaromaaro des’ and the crowd swooning to the more familiar ‘dholbaje’ and ‘damadam mast kalandar’. More of interest was the detailed descriptions instruments that have traditionally been used by the tribe of artists.
