Ahmedabad, November 26, 2015

Jagriti, the student-run social service wing of MICA launched a new initiative on Wednesday, towards helping bridge the digital divide and promoting technological literacy among underprivileged children. Jagriti has partnered with Tata Consultancy Services and Free Software Movement of India to distribute 36 computers to children belonging to 3 government schools in and around Shela village. Through this initiative, Jagriti is trying to bring information technology aided education closer to the under privileged. The entire drive has been planned in three distinct stages.

In the first leg of the drive, members of Jagriti and volunteers visited government schools in Amli, Bhopal and Shela, interacted with the children and teachers there and distributed the computers. The computers were donated to us by Tata Consultancy Services Pvt. Ltd., Gandhinagar. In the second phase of the activity, Jagriti would be installing a custom-made operating system on those computers, to aid learning. This will be taken up once the schools resume after the vacation period. This operating system would have several tools that would make learning a fun, enjoyable and a joyful process for the kids, prompting them to think beyond the classroom and explore the world of information made available through internet. To this end, Jagriti has partnered with a non- profit organization called Free Software Movement of India for the operating system and other necessary technical assistance.

The final phase of the activity will involve the community, both within and outside MICA, to assist in the imparting of computer aided education to the kids of these under privileged schools. This initiative would benefit around 500 students in the three schools put together.

Ashish Avadhanula, a member of the Jagriti junior team and one of the organizers behind the initiative, said, “We hope that this humble initiative of ours would motivate more people to adopt the usage of information technology for social impact. Teaching is a great way for our students to learn about the problems that plague the society outside, while the children benefit by getting access to what we, the digitally literate, take for granted. We request anybody who would want to get associated with this initiative to get in touch with us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .”
