Communication starts with the five senses and travels through posture, movement, tone and patterns. True to its name, MICA’s emphasis on effective communication goes beyond text books and curriculum and seeks to explore the nature and art of communication. Sankalp, the student-run theatre committee at MICA, laid the ideal platform for students to discover the facets of communication. On the evening of the 26th of October, Sankalp organized the second edition of this year of its grand theatre fest, KhulaAasman in the Mani Ayer Auditorium here in the campus.

The festival saw students from across batches come together, to script, direct, produce and enact their own ideas on stage, while being cheered on by a packed auditorium. This edition, five plays across genres were chosen to be displayed, covering themes ranging from murder mystery to social awareness. The fest featured a healthy combination of adaptations and original work.

KhulaAasman started off with Saahil Nair’s “Kinds Of Stories”, an intense, thought-provoking dialogue between a traveller and a stranger which takes a dark turn as it spirals into a meta-textual examination of identity, guilt and self-deception. The play featured deep and witty dialogues and a mind boggling twist in the end. Ipshita Khan’s ‘Ghunghroo’ was a poignant representation of dance and the varying roles it plays in people’s lives portrayed through a collection of stories.

One of the highlights of the evening was the mime act, “What the!”, directed by ShenoyChakerwarti and Himanshu Aggarwal, where artists donning black costumes and white face-paint enacted a series of incidents that portray the struggles of different facets of the society today. With a mesmerizing tune of the tabla being played in the background, the moving performances by the actors enthralled the viewers.

‘The Unusual Suspects,’ directed by AnanyaGanguli and Arathi Nair was a smartly written Whodunnit? mystery, filled with clever pop culture references and a witty turn at the end. The cast-heavy play was a riveting experience, leaving the viewers guessing till the end.

The most iconic performance of the day was undoubtedly Aditya Thakar’s ‘Kya FarakPadtaHai’, a powerful street play performed under the starry sky as students crowded around them to watch. The Hindi play, used familiar jingles and Bollywood tunes to reinforce the strong social messages they conveyed to the viewers. Harnessing the immense impact of a medium such as a street play, the act attacked the ignorant and casual attitude of the people/society towards serious social concerns.

As the students left the enticingly decorated auditorium late at night, debating and reviewing the performances they were treated to, yet another edition of KhulaAasman drew to a close, after serving its purpose of spreading to the students, the passion for theatre and the values of communication it imparts.
