Ahmedabad, September 1, 2015

Communication starts with the five senses and travels through posture, movement, tone and patterns. True to its name, MICA’s emphasis on effective communication goes beyond text books and curriculum and seeks to explore the nature and art of communication. Sankalp, the student-run theatre committee at MICA, laid the ideal platform for students to discover the facets of communication. Spread over 30th and 31st of August, Sankalp organized its grand annual theatre fest, KhulaAasman in the Mani Ayer Auditorium here in the campus.

The festival saw students from across batches come together, to script, direct, produce and enact their own ideas on stage, while being cheered on by a packed auditorium. This year, eight plays across genres were chosen to be displayed, covering themes ranging from surrogacy to surrealism. The fest featured a healthy combination of adaptations and original work.

NandanMajumdar’sbrilliant original script, “AajJaane Ki Zidd Na Karo” explored the nature of relationships and what the veil of death can do to a family. The thrilling 13-minute play kept the audience at the edge of their seats and the auditorium broke into a thundering applause as the final twist revealed the suspense of the play. “The Battle OfNurmengard”, a play by ShenoyChakerwarti and Mrinal Parekh explored an exciting overlap of adaptation and original script, by bringing to life a fan-fiction about a crucial sub-plot in the Harry Potter series.

Aditya Thakkar’s “ChoriChoriNazreMili”, an adaptation of the Marathi play “DivsaTuRatri Me”, dealt with the story of a girl with a deaf father, dumb brother and a servant who acted as the missing link. The play alternatingly made the audience laugh hysterically and sit back and reflect upon how society treats the disabled. “Laadki,” a play scripted and directed by Ipshita Khan, brought to stage the concept of surrogacy and the moral dilemmas associated with it. A concept which is still not accepted by the society at large, surrogacy is a controversial topic that is still being debated. “Laadki”, through its crisp story-telling and moving performances, once again sparked a dialogue among the audience.

As the students left the enticingly decorated auditorium late at night, debating and reviewing the performances they were treated to for two consecutive days, yet another edition of KhulaAasman drew to a close, after serving its purpose of spreading to the students, the passion for theatre and the values of communication it imparts.
