Ahmedabad, January 14, 2016

The students of MICA came together to celebrate the festival of MakarSankranti on campus across cultural divisions. MakarSankranti is a harvest festival celebrated across the country under several names and traditions. As a tribute to the cultural diversity among the students and faculty of MICA, CulComm, its student-run Cultural Committee decided to celebrate the occasion in an inclusive manner, with several cultures coming together.

The celebrations started on the evening of 13th, with Lohri, the Punjabi cultural celebration of the Winter solstice. A band of dholiswent from hostel to hostel in the evening, spreading the spirit of joy and gathering students as they proceeded. Enthusiastic students, dressed in bright ethnic wear assembled at the cricket ground, where CulComm had arranged for a bonfire, an important feature of Lohri. After the customary dedication of popcorn, revadi, chikki and groundnuts to the Almighty, students and faculty had traditional sweets and danced around the fire, reveling in the spirit of togetherness. Around 80 students and faculty were present for the evening of rejoicing.

On 14th, the students started the day by gathering at the terrace dressed in traditional wear to celebrate Uttarayan, the Gujarati version of the MakarSankranti festival. CulComm distributedpatang and threads and students and faculty flew them while Gujarati music was played. Sweets were distributed in the terrace.

As lunch neared, students were treated to delicious Pongal, the hallmark of the Tamil harvest festival of the same name.
