Ahmedabad, January 29, 2016

Thursday evening saw MICA, Ahmedabad’s campus come alive with an exciting and interesting blend of music. The event, aptly titled “Harmony Through Music”, organized by Studio7, the student-run music committee of MICA saw enthralling performances by highly skilled performers from the Kalavant Center for Music and Dance.

Starting at around 8:00 PM in the Mani Aiyer auditorium at the MICA Campus at Shela, the concert featured esteemed musicians including Ustad Kadar Khan, UstadShahidParvez, PremikRussel Tubbs, PanditsHarashankarBhattacharjee, Naresh Malhotra, NityanandHaldipur, Shakir A. Khan, Azam Ali Khan, MunnawarMasoom and Imran Khan.

The event, which spanned almost two hours, featured spell binding tunes which fused the sounds of Indian traditional and western instruments, including an inspiring duet with the tabla and sarangi and a jugalbandi with sitar, sarangi, saxophone and tablas. The high-point of the performance was a unique rendition of Brubeck’s jazz classic, “Take Five”, using Indian instruments. The artistes on campus were impressed with the reception and feedback they derived from the students and even extended their show duration by including vocal performances upon student demand. The concert ended on a high note with ‘Mora Saiyan’.

“It was beautiful hearing the saxophone in a setting like this. Premik, who is a popular American saxophonist, had said that he would try to keep up with the Indian Ragas used, but he did way more than keep up. Time signatures, blending of Hindustani scales and Western scales was stellar. Take 5 was beautiful,” said Aditya Banerjee, one of the organizers of the concert.

Studio7 used the platform to unveil its innovative pet-project, the setting up of a state-of-the-art “Jam Pad” on campus. Aditya, who was the brain behind the initiative, complemented his team for their support and guidance in setting up the facility. He defined ‘Jam-Pad’ as a space for passionate and amateur musicians to come together and develop a culture of encouraging, creating and appreciating music.

The initiative was carried out in partnership with House Of Rock (Bopal), and their team headed by Nisarg and Prithvi, who along with the Studio7 team were involved in the project straight from planning, sound treatment and instruments, to execution.
