Ahmedabad, February 28, 2016

On the evening of the 27th of February, the second day of Yellow Umbrella Festival ended on a high note. As the evening faded into a cool, breezy night, six teams competed for glory in the ‘Radiophonique’ event, where students in teams of six performed Radio Plays that lasted between 10 to 30 minutes in duration.

The Open Air Theatre, fondly called the OAT saw the buzz of the evening as the YUF Organizing Committee, specifically Studio7, the Music Committee at MICA organized a Karaoke Night, where students were encouraged to croon their favourite Bollywood numbers, cheered on by friends around them. The event was a grand success, with phenomenal number of registrations that went on till after midnight.

The Campus welcomed the third day of the festival with an enthralling Authorspeak by star designer Wendell Rodericks. “Most people feel that fashion designers have pink hair, party on page 3 and have no brains. Part of it is true, but a lot of it is hard work.” This is how Wendell Rodricks, one of India’s top fashion designers and authors chose to greet the students of MICA on the morning of 28th February. Mumbai born Wendell Rodricks studied Fashion Designing in the USA and France from 1986 to 1988.

Wendell’s first collection from Goa earned him the title ‘Guru of Minimalism’ and his next collection in 1995 pioneered the concept of ‘resort wear’ and ‘eco-friendly’ garments at a time the words were not yet coined in India. “The world has become so small that you can work from a small village in Goa, but thanks to globalization you can have the world knocking at your door.”

He took students on his journey, which saw him spending years dabbling with the culture, stories and natural elements of Goa, and inspired by his late friend Mario Miranda; in January 2012 Rodricks turned author with Moda Goa – History and Style published by Harper Collins. This book got rave reviews for its portrayal of long forgotten aspects of Goa’s cultural history and costume history. He also talked about his memoir, The Green Room, which was published by RupaRaintree and launched at Lakme Fashion Week. This is how Wendell Rodricks views his success, and he signed off by urging students to follow their hearts and not compromise on things that they truly believe in.

The event was followed by a grand ‘Theatron’ event, which was a stage play performance by students from within and outside MICA, with the theme as ‘the Seven Primary Colors’, fitting the theme of this years YUF, which was ‘Rainbow Agenda.’ Students displayed remarkable talent by performing plays of several genres and entertaining the crowd.

This was followed by a Face-Painting competition and a Fashion Show in the evening.
