Ahmedabad, February 11, 2015

The Literary committee at MICA today organized one of its flagship events - 'Author Speak’ in which two of the biggest and celebrated names in graphic novels in India: Orijit Sen and Appupen were invited on campus to share their experiences.

Orijit Sen is a graphic designer, a comic creator, an illustrator and also the Creative Director and co-founder of People Tree. His famous works include the pioneering graphic novel 'The River of stories', 'Imung' and the award winning collaboration 'Trash!’

Appupen, is a comics creator, artist and musician who tells stories from a mythical world called Halahala. His first graphic novel, 'Moonward', published by Blaft in 2009, was selected for the Angouleme festival in France, 2011. His second silent graphic novel, 'Legends of Halahala' (Harper Collins) was a first of its kind, published in January 2013. His latest offering 'Aspyrus', (Harper, 2014) has just started taking over the world now.

During their session, they shared pictures of their works which not only included graphic novels but also wall paintings, murals, canvas art etc. on various issues prevalent in the society such as corruption, mundane unhealthy lifestyles and pollution. Orijit Sen shared his graphic illustrations of St.Kabir’s life and times and talked about his style and technique used into the making of the same. One of Orijit Sen’s interesting pieces talked about the Emerald Apsara who descends on the Heartbreak Hotel and dreamily seduces and spirits away the noted Bengali adventurer (and alleged inventor of the monkey-cap) PR Mazoomder. The story ended with a profound message, “Art saves those it seduces”.

Appupen on the other hand described his experiences with visual narration. His latest work Aspyrus talks about a dream that takes over the world. The dream is personified as a dragon-like creature that slowly feeds on people’s minds and grows more and more grotesque. He drew an allegory between the creature and today’s culture of capitalism and consumerism. The students could immediately relate to his stories and were deeply moved by the end of the session. His other notable works included illustrations for Lounge Piranha, a Bangalore-based band, for which he was drummer; Canvas art for “Leaping Windows”, a local café in Mumbai and for Comic Strips for ESPN Cricinfo and The “Rolling Stone India” Magazine.

All the invitees were thoroughly mesmerized with the sheer brilliance and talent of these two titans of graphic novels and the stories that they shared were truly inspiring and left a lasting impact on the literature and art aficionados.
