The campus was quite abuzz this weekend with its Grand MICA Alumni Meet on the 25th and 26th of January, 2015. A business conclave gave an energetic start to this event where some of our senior alumni were members on the panel. Industry stalwarts, faculty and students attended the business conclave, “CROSSROADS 2015”; the topic discussed was ‘The New Age Mad Men’. The discussion saw illustrious MICAn Alumni, who belonged to either Traditional agencies or Digital agencies, deliberate upon the evolution of the advertising industry. They spoke about how exciting advertising is as a profession and shared their thoughts about the business. Traditional agencies were represented by Dennis Koshy (Vice President, Draftfcb), Ganga Ganapathi (Vice President, Ogilvy & Mather) and Shweta Bhatnagar (Vice President, Lowe Lintas and partners). Digital agencies were represented by Prapti Banerjee (Mobility & Digital marketing Consultant), Ajinkya Pawar (Strategist, Junxion) and Ajay Gupta (Brand Partner, Rediffusion-Wunderman). The conclave was moderated by Madhukar Sabnavis (Country Head, Ogilvy & Mather).

Welcoming the alumni and the panelists, Dr. Nagesh Rao, President and Director at MICA said, “During the inauguration ceremony we decided to leave one lamp unlit, to signify that there’s always a new idea, a new way of thinking, and I am more sure its going to be a MICAn who comes up with it.”

The interactive conclave session saw MICAns gain an immense depth of understanding of the current scenario within the advertising industry, and also the varied perspectives have traditional and new age digital agencies.

On being asked about the culture and daily ups and downs in the industry, Ganga Ganapathi, Vice President, Ogilvy & Mather, spoke about the joy of advertising, and also the highs and the lows where one can go from an absolute low to feeling like one can conquer the world. The panelists discussed recent changes in the ways of working in the industry. As per Prapti Banerjee, Mobility & Digital marketing Consultant, “At the end of the day we are in the business of talking to the consumers, the business of communicating new ideas, but the way we are communicating ideas is changing.” The discussion also touched upon the role of client servicing. Dennis Koshy, Vice President, Draftfcb, said, “Who comes up with an idea or who takes ownership of the idea can vary. It has to be kept in mind that an idea is agnostic; it does not belong to anybody, and has to have universal appeal. It all boils down to how you extract more value out of the client.”

Followed by lunch, a cricket match, a game or two of football, a barbecue and musical unplugged session, the Grand Alumni Meet ended with a lively Alumni get-together.
