Ahmedabad, February 09, 2016

On the 8th of February, MICA’s student run committee MLS (MICA Lecture Series) hosted Mr. Deepesh Nanda, CEO, Gas Power Systems, GE South Asia for an interesting and informative lecture. In his lecture that lasted for nearly one and a half hours, Mr. Deepesh covered diverse topics ranging from GE’s glorious history, the dynamics around mergers and acquisitions, to Indian mythology and impressionist art.

Speaking of the losses GE incurred after the 9/11 attacks, Mr.Deepesh emphasized the importance of businesses to efficiently manage risk. He shared interesting events succeeding the global financial crisis of 2008 and how GE managed to restore market confidence. Speaking about the importance of mergers and acquisitions in the diversification of business in the current environment, he detailed the complexities involved in it. He illustrated this through examples of how GE failed to acquire Honeywell because of resistance from one EU officer and how the company managed to pull off a landmark acquisition of Alstom several years later.

Having set the background of his lecture with present world examples, Mr.Deepesh proceeded to weave a connection with how Indian mythologies conceived, interpreted and resolved complexity. He emphasized that today’s businesses need to take lessons from the great Indian mythologies. To illustrate the complexity of plot and characters, he narrated a small portion of the Mahabharata, detailing the flow of narrative and the number of plots and sub-plots that interlinked to present the great tale.

He crisply juxtaposed this with how GE recognizes the need to simplify processes through means like delegation of authority to ease decision making, feedback based product building processes, etc.

He concluded his lecture by indicating the importance of cultivating a healthy reading habit and how fiction can help in simplifying and influencing real-life decisions, if only one could keep an open mind and draw inspiration from them. Answering student questions, Mr.Deepesh spoke about impressionist art and hinted at how the pricing of art is a unique and interesting process.
