Ahmedabad, October 15, 2015

MICA conducted a mediaworkshop today in its premises, presided over by Robert G. Picard, who is known worldwide as the father of media economics and business. The workshop which started at 9.30 in the morning was attended by more than 100 participants from across different strata of the society.

The objective of the workshop was to understand how the nature of media is changing drastically in the Indian and Global perspective. The four distinguished speakers and panellists who participated in the workshop addressed different dimensions of the issue in a three pronged approach of media, profit and policy and its local and global ramifications.

Prof.Picard, in his address to the enthusiastic audience, spoke extensively about the challenges faced by global media houses with respect to ownership of media and media governance. He emphasized on the fact that even though new media has phenomenally changed consumption behaviour by creating new consumers, and playing a role in traditional media ownership, the essential policy challenges faced by them remain the same.

Prof. Tara Nair of GIDR, Gujarat, talked about corporatization of media as an age old phenomena, which has constantly existed and evolved, from 1930s to the present age, either covertly or overtly. She focussed on the fact that after liberalisation, ownership of media has increasingly blurred and corporates and politicians manipulate this ambiguity to influence the population. She called for revalidation of data provided by traditional corporate houses to exclude any bias and questioned whether Indian media regulators have adequate capacity to handle such issues.

R.K. Mishra, in his address, touched upon the idea of how journalism and the role of the journalist is evolving over the period of time, from news-gathering to news-creating. He spoke about how new media, through citizen journalism and social media journalism is rapidly changing the landscape of creating and publishing news. Dr. T.T. Sreekumar, in his speech pondered upon the theoretical and philosophical questions faced by print media in the digital age and the changes experienced by the civil society, consumers and the mass in the context of emergence of new media. He argued that even though we as consumers are liberated, the ownership structures of media houses remains the same and the phenomena of news creation and propaganda still continue in the same way.

Prof.Santhosh K. Patra, who co-ordinated the event, said, “The notion of the workshop is to bring different stakeholders from academia, student fraternity and civil society to discuss what are the key threats, challenges and opportunities of media in the 21st century, both in the Indian and Global context.

This event was created by MICA’s present director Dr.Nagesh Rao, with an objective to bring expertise from the best institutes from around the globe to engage with our students, faculty in multiple domains like research, teaching, etc. Today’s event saw participation from different institutions like PDPU, EDI, Gujarat University, Gujarat Vidyapeeth, Times Of India, Kadi University, DS University, etc.
