Ahmedabad, January 11, 2017

The International Communication Management Conference, 2017, organised by MICA, Ahmedabad, commenced on January 10, 2017. The event began with a presidential address from MICA’s President and CEO DDB Mudra Group, Mr. Madhukar Kamath. Mr. Kamath observed that MICA stands at the crossroads of the creative and the logical: the heart and the head. From this convergence, MICA has developed leaders who can lead the digital age.

Dr. Preeti Shroff, Dean, MICA, welcomed the audience, and stated that “the next three days would be an interesting interface between the industry and the society in terms of developing dialogues between representatives of the two domains.”

Ms. Lakshmi Pratury, CEO, INK India, then addressed the audience with her exposition of the 4 Ps of living. The 4Ps, namely passion, profession, perseverance and price, she said, would help anybody achieve their dreams. Her address was followed by a talk by Professor Ernest. J. Wilson, Dean, Annenberg School of Communication, University of Southern California. He elaborated on the necessity of the 3rd space in the modern corporate and social environments. whereby he discussed the three key elements of the 3rd space: cultural competence, adaptivity, and creativity. These qualities, he stated, “needed to be melded with the next levels of skills of soft skills and communication.” Further he observed that these qualities were almost universal in their applicability. Professor Wilson concluded by stating that soft skills need to be bolder and more open in their positioning of the importance of communication.

Professor Morgan Asante, from the Morgan State University, United States of America, took on the stage next to share his profound experience of giving lectures in prison. He explained that he learnt the issues of racial profiling and problems of racist attacks first hand, in this domain. He inspired the audience, stating that “it is important to break the barriers and maximizing the resources, overcoming the challenges and escape the situation that is binding you.”

The day concluded with a session on ‘the necessity of understanding communication, social change and challenges in terms of art.’ Speakers Ms. Sohini Chakraborty, Founder, SANVED, Kolkata, India, Mr. Sanjeev Chatterjee, Professor, University of Miami, Coral Gables, USA, Mr. AatishIndrekar, Budhan Theatre, Ahmedabad, India and Mr. Ajay Jhala, CEO and Co-founder, BBDO India, Mumbai, India, discussed various issues like the importance of context, role of body language in this digitised world, and the role of theatre as an empowering means of communication.
