MLS (MICA Lecture Series), a student-run committee in MICA that facilitates guest lectures from stalwarts in the industry, organized a lecture on Thursday afternoon in the MICA premises at Shela. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Sameer Nair, Group CEO of Balaji Telefilms. In the informative and engaging session which saw a packed auditorium, Mr. Sammer Nair recounted his career journey in the media industry and the changes that the digital age has brought to how we receive and perceive information and content.

He began by sharing his story navigating the world of Indian Television- from Doordarshan to the reigning Subscription model, mapping the process of his career with the evolutions in television content and distribution. Talking about the critical need for communication in any business in today’s day and age, he emphasized on the importance of politeness in communication and networking and how it can make a great difference in the perception of content.

Mr. Nair reminisced on the times when soap operas were weekly. Under his tenure, Star Plus came up with the concept of daily soap operas in collaboration with Ekta Kapoor, which went on to revolutionize television viewing in India and giving birth to a great new market for advertisers. He shared informative insights into the revolution in Indian television, popularly known as KaunBanegaCrorepati was also conceptualized in the course of his association with Star, and explained the rationale behind how signing Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bacchan made sense and the manner in which it paid off.

However, he acknowledged the rapid changes in the habits of television viewers, which calls for innovative strategies with respect to the content presented.“There is an audience that has evolved past daily soap operas”, he said.Towards the end of his lecture, Mr. Nair stressed upon the growing importance of the digital sphere and how this makes the consumer more selective about the content they want to watch on TV.

He also spoke about how all news and media is now found on Twitter instead of traditional channels like newspapers and the difference it would make for traditional news providers. Answering questions from the students, Mr.Sameer Nair hinted that, with the upcoming ATL digital launch, BalajiTelefilms aims to become the Netflix of India. When asked to give a few words of advice to the students present, Mr.Nair encouraged them to take up new challenges and not be afraid to embrace chaos. “Calm seas don’t make a skilled sailor,” he said. “If I am not able to go out and shake people’s hands, then I should make my hand one worth shaking,” he signed off.
