MICA witnessed a landmark ceremony within its premises on Friday, August 14, 2015. The valedictory programme of the 8th batch of the Online Post Graduate Certificate Programme in Advertisement Management and Public Relations was held and about 46 students received certificates, marking the end of the programme for this academic year.

The ceremony began with the lighting of the lamp by the Dean and the Chief Guest, and was declared open by Prof. Falguni Vasavada Oza, the Chairperson of the program, who extended a warm welcome to the students and others present. She introduced the Chief Guest, Mr. Jay Ruparel, Co-founder & Executive Director, Azure Knowledge Corporation, and invited him to take to the podium in order to address the students.

Mr. Ruparel is the co-founder of one of the largest Knowledge Process Outsourcing companies of India with more than 2000 employees across its centers in India, China, Kenya and USA, providing knowledge services to Fortune 500 companies. He’s also the President of Gujarat Electronics and Software Industry Association, the largest association of ICT and Electronics companies in Gujarat, and a visiting faculty of entrepreneurship courses at IIM-A, MICA and EDI.

His speech centered on innovation and the enterprising spirit. “In today’s day and age”, he said, “It is not important to have a legacy, in case we decide to run a business. If there’s a great idea, there are plenty of people out there to fund it.”

Mr. Ruparel urged the students to create new things – independently or within an organization and not let unfavourable ecosystems inhibit their dreams. He recommended MICAns to look beyond existing opportunities and focus on execution. The first step towards that was getting the required funds. “There are three things that every investor looks for in a business before funding them: first, they have an affinity for groups of people who are passionate about an idea or a concept – because to start something new requires an enterprising spirit”, he proclaimed. “Second, what they give up in order to pursue their dreams- i.e. the scale of risk they undertake to leave everything behind and do what the like in the best possible manner, is very crucial. And third, of course is how quickly they latch on to an opportunity and better their business.”

Mr. Ruparel also spoke about a host of other new buzzwords in the space of innovation such as 3-D printing, IoT, SMAC (Social, Mobility, Analytics and Cloud) and omnichannel. On an ending note, he said “there are two types of people who are always happy – children and mad people. So be mad, frenzied and go after that one idea and it will truly be worth it.”

Prof. Falguni then gave the valedictory address. “I am proud today, because my students have been able to establish a very strong emotional connect with the course- which focused on content and context of advertising- as well as with each other, despite coming from very diverse backgrounds- where the mix ranged from RJs to TV Producers, Personal Shoppers to Psychologists, Account Planners to Digital Marketers”, she affirmed. “The course ends but our relationship begins today”, she added further.

The ceremony ended after a handful of students from the course shared their experiences and personal memories associated with the programme, followed by a high tea.
