He began by acknowledging the 15-year-old relationship between MICA and L’Oréal; some of their brightest talent, Pankaj Sharma who is from the 2003 batch and heads the brands - Garnier & Maybelline, and more than 20 alumni of MICA have joined us over the years.” He had 3 lessons to impart – “Have a sense of purpose in what you do. In whatever you are going to do; be it working in a media company, an advertising agency or even L’Oréal, it is not just about creating and selling but finding a deeper meaning in what we do. Make a difference and have the courage of conviction. Have a passion for learning, and build a strong foundation. Balance your ambition with the desire to grow.” Finding the occasion to also be a good time to reflect, he said, “I would like you to reflect upon whom you wish to thank. Find a mentor or somebody you look up to. The trick is to identify the right mentor and getting them adequately engaged and motivated to giving time. In L’Oréal, we actively practise Reverse Mentoring”. He concluded with a quote by Victor Hugo saying, “Nothing succeeds like an idea whose time has come.”, wishing the bright curious students the best of luck for their future endeavours.

Mr. Jain’s speech was followed by a note of appreciation by Mr. Shailendra Raj Mehta, President, MICA. He spoke of the various achievements of MICA in the last academic year and complimented the various committees for their outstanding work. He said, “There are globally over two thousand MICA alumni and their contribution is immense in making MICA what it is. He concluded with couplets in English, Hindi and Urdu, including George Bernard Shaw, where he asks the question,” Why not?” The MICA council for Students Affairs gave a poignant trip down memory lane and the highlights of their batch through these two years, using pop-culture references and contextual humour. They expressed gratitude to the Dean, President, Registrar and all staff members of MICA for their enduring support.

Strategic management and communication institute MICA said on Saturday that it achieved 100% placements for final year placement of 24th batch of its flagship PGDM-Communications course.

The premier institute said that 180 students chose to be placed through the campus placement process. Seventy-eight companies made offers, making an average of 2.3 students per company.

“The average CTC offered was Rs 12.8 lakh per annum, an increase over Rs 12.3 lakh in the previous year. The highest CTC offered was Rs 58.2 lakh per annum as against Rs 35.3 lakh last year,” MICA said in a release.

The institute said that the highest number of 36 offers each were made in FMCG & FMCD sectors, and IT / IteS, internet, technology & e-commerce. They were followed by media and entertainment (34), advertising, events, PR & digital agencies (32), analytics, research & consulting (17), retail and real estate (13) and BFSI & manufacturing (12).

MICA said that regular recruiters like Amazon, Amul, Google, L’Oreal, Publicis Group, Raymond, Reliance Brands, Titan, VIP, and Wipro were among those who continued their partnership with the institute. Bajaj Auto, Bajaj Electricals, Citi Bank, Deloitte, Fieldfresh Foods, Essel Group, E&Y, FirstCry.com, Grofers, Gulf Oil, Tata Global Beverages, Havells, REC and Target, were among the new or returning recruiters. AlShaya and Tolaram Group made International offers.

Prof Vaneet Chhibber, associate director of marketing & external relations, who also heads placements at MICA, said, “One out of three students had a pre-placement offer/ pre-placement interview offer (PPO / PPI) in hand, a testimony of their performance in internships as well as the talent they possess.”

Students also received offers from brands like Nestle, Flipkart and Samsung India, after winning/excelling in National B-School Competitions. Last year, 17%, or one in six students had received a PPO / PPI offer, MICA added.

The students of MICA got an unforgettable experience as National Geographic organized an exclusive meet and greet session with the all women crew Indian Navy’s sailing vessel Tarini. The session was moderated by Dr. Falguni Vasavada-Oza.

The inspiring Indian Navy officers are better known for creating history by circumnavigating the globe in a grueling 254-day voyage. The excitement was palpable as the six members of Indian Navy engaged students with conversations on women breaking the odds to emerge victorious, as part of the National Geographic’s #GirlsWhoSailed initiative.

With #GirlsWhoSailed, National Geographic is celebrating the spirit of women who break barriers and stereotypes. As part of the initiative, National Geographic is showcasing the challenges and hardships the Tarini crew overcame on their historic journey through an exclusive documentary that will premiere on International Women’s Day. As part of this campaign, National Geographic and the Tarini crew are travelling to leading colleges across Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and New Delhi to inspire young students, especially girls by showcasing the real life story of these six courageous women.

Additionally, the #GirlsWhoSailed initiative is encouraging people across the country to share such inspiring stories of Indian women they know. With this background, Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi (skipper), crewmembers including Lt Commander Pratibha Jamwal, Lt Commander Aishwarya Boddapati, Lt Commander P Swathi, Lt Commander S Vijaya Devi, Lieutenant Payal Gupta, shared their stories with the students about the historic voyage. Students were enlightened with stories of courage after a 20 minute discussion, which was aimed at helping them unlock their true potential.

Vartika Joshi, Lieutenant Commander and lead Tarini Crew said, “There are bound to be hurdles that one has to face while achieving a dream. Many a times these hurdles would back you down and may mould you to believe that it’s unachievable. Courage, however, lies in sailing beyond these hurdles, holding on to yourself and rising up even when you do not have the energy, even when your surroundings look murky. Despite all odds, the challenges, the stereotypes, there are a few who choose to look beyond the societal mind sets about gender, etc. and make them a non-factor in the way to achieving their dreams. Hence, we are grateful to National Geographic for extending support with the #Girlswhosailed campaign and giving us a platform to encourage women, while showcasing a story of our own”

From harsh seas, stormy conditions to extreme cold temperatures, the film ‘Tarini’ chronicles the journey of every difficulty the vessel faced during the incredibly inspiring expedition known as ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama’. On September 10, 2017, the all women crew of INSV took off from Goa to set a milestone of circumnavigating the globe. The grueling 254-day voyage, which included touching five countries, crossing the equator twice, sailing across four continents and three oceans, completing more than 21,600 nautical miles, ended with the crew returning home on May 21, 2018.

Tarini will premiere on National Geographic at 9 pm, on March 8, 2019. It will also be available on Hotstar.
