The International Kite Festival- Gujarat
A kite needs no introduction. Despite one’s age, be it a small child playing in the street or an elderly couple sitting on a bench, the sight of a colorful kite gliding across the blue sky never ceases to amaze people. Kites are loved all over the world, so much so that there is at least a kite festival held in some part of the world every weekend. The International Kite festival held in Gujarat is however a different league of its own.
Celebrated on 14th of January every year, the International Kite Festival in Gujarat is attended by kite enthusiasts from all over the world. The day is actually celebrated as Uttarayan (or Makar Sankranti), which marks the Sun’s transition into the zodiac of Capricorn and is regarded as one of the biggest festivals in Gujarat.
Why you must not miss the International Kite festival
The enthusiasm you can see in Gujarat is unparalleled and cannot be experienced in any other part of the world. The day of Uttarayan is eagerly awaited by children and adults alike. People get up early and come out with their kites and strings on rooftops and open fields. Bollywood music is played at full blast and sweets are exchanged while the kites soar high in the sky. The entire Ahmedabad sky is filled with kites on this day.
Not just the locals, but people from all across the world throng to Ahmedabad to celebrate the festival and bring their own uniqueness in the festival.
The festival is enjoyed both with family and friends at home and as an official festival at the official venue, which is supported by the tourism department of the Government of Gujarat.
Colorful Kites of all shapes and sizes are flown, mythological beasts, insects, birds, flags etc. cover the whole Ahmedabad sky.
Though the festival is meant to be fun, but mind you kite flying can sometimes be very competitive. Kite enthusiasts will try to bring down each other’s kite and shout the battle cry “Kai Po Che” when one is able to cut down an opponent’s kite.
The festival is not only confined to flying kites, but also to tingle the taste buds. Delicacies like Undhiyu, Jalebi, Chikki/ Talsankli, Ladoo, etc. are a must to enjoy the festival to its fullest.
The whole endeavor doesn’t end with the setting of the Sun, but continues throughout the night too! Thousands of paper lanterns as seen in the following image, lighten the dark night sky.
